“Kugel Architekten” is specialized in design, consulting and processing of leichtweight constructions, membranes and retractable roofings, already in the second family generation.

We are working in the fields of culture, sport, industry, leisure, gastronomy, event and exhibition. Our planning services comprises shading roofs, courtyard roofings, special tents, temporary or permanent roofings for open air theatres, horticultural shows, sports facilities, expositions, swimming pools, recreation parks, car dealerships etc. The challenging developement of retractable roofs and mobile constructions is the focal point of our multidisciplinary work in an international network of specialized civil engineers and capable companies.

Ideally we assist our clients from the first design to the execution of construction work. We are planning for public and private builders as well as for different architects and engineers, calling us in as consulting experts. We are pursuing the goal of developing each project according to all architectural, structural and economic aspects for best results. We are always prepared for new developments and the application of innovative materials and cutting-edge technologies.

Nikolai Kugel was educated at the University of Stuttgart, graduating in 1997. As assistant professor at the „Institut für Tragkonstruktionen und konstruktives Entwerfen“ (institute for structural design) he expanded his engineering design knowledge and focussed on teaching students (1998–2003). At the “Akademie der bildenden Künste” (academie of applied arts) Stuttgart he taught structural engineering for architects as visiting lecturer (2000–2007). Since 2014 he is teaching lightweight design at the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.

As self-employed architect he primarily spezialized on membrane buildings and lightweight structures, operating internationally.

In December 2008 Nikolai Kugel received the MSH-Prize for Architecture 2008 for the retractable roof in Kufstein. (Vallourec & Mannesmann Tubes).
